New Penile Pump Could Improve Patient Satisfaction, Confidence

Erectile dysfunction (ED) has a dramatic impact on quality of life. Treatments for ED continue to improve, and penile prostheses have one of the highest patient satisfaction rates. In the April 2008 issue of Urologic Nursing, Susanne A. Quallich, Dana A. Ohl and Rodney L. Dunn survey urologic health care practitioners to find the penile prosthesis pump that is easiest to use and teach to patients.

Participants found the Coloplast Titan® One-Touch Release pump design was more user friendly, say the authors. Participants also felt they could quickly and reliably teach patients to use the device. With faster instruction time and ease of use, Quallich and co-authors say patient satisfaction rates will increase.

If patients can be trained quickly and effectively, say the authors, the trainer's time is used more efficiently, patient satisfaction goes up, and the patient gains confidence that he can operate the device at home. Quallich and co-authors believe this could represent an overall time and cost savings to urology practices and fewer repeat visits.
