Commenting on today's UK Comprehensive Spending Review, Peter Cardy, Chief Executive, Macmillan Cancer Relief, said: "Of course it is important that the Government invests in defence but equally there should be no retreat on health.

One of the great advances of the last few years has been the increased contribution that users of cancer services have been empowered to make through the Cancer Partnership Project.

This goes to the heart of ensuring patient choice is more than just rhetoric. Real progress has been made in building better services in partnership with people affected by cancer. It is vital that the significant gains to both the NHS and patients, at minimal cost to the taxpayer, are not lost. We urge the Government to invest sustained political will and funding to defend the welcome progress made."

Notes to Editors:

Macmillan Cancer Relief helps people who are living with cancer. Each and every day 741 people in the UK are told they have cancer. There are now over a million people living with cancer, and four in ten will receive a cancer diagnosis during their lifetime.
