Randox produces high quality apolipoprotein tests for the diagnosis, monitoring and research of cardiovascular disease and related conditions. Apolipoproteins are essential components of lipoproteins, for example HDL and LDL, responsible for transporting cholesterol and triglycerides around the body.

Six apolipoprotein tests are available from Randox: Apo A-I, Apo A-II, Apo B, Apo C-II, Apo C-III and Apo E. Lipoproteins such as HDL and LDL are made up of a polar lipid outer shell and a core containing neutral lipids: triglycerides and cholesterol esters. All the lipoproteins have this basic structure but they are different sizes, densities and compositions. Apolipoproteins are structural components of lipoproteins, either integral to the outer shell or bound to the outside. Apolipoproteins interact with transport proteins, lipoprotein receptors and lipolytic enzymes.

In the past, total cholesterol testing was the standard for assessing cardiovascular disease risk. This has now been replaced by the lipid profile where HDL, LDL and triglycerides are tested alongside total cholesterol. Other contributing factors such as weight, blood pressure and family history are used to assess an individual's overall cardiovascular disease risk. Additional tests that may be useful are C-reactive protein, lipoprotein (a) and the apolipoproteins, all of which are available from Randox.
