The NPA has produced a resource for the promotion of safer measurement and administration of liquid medicines. It is the final resource in the current series from the NPA in light of recent NPSA patient safety alerts.
The NPA resource, 'Promoting safer measurement and administration of liquid medicines' is composed of a template SOP and guidance notes. Its purpose is to ensure the supply of measuring devices for liquid medicines complies with the NPSA recommendations on 'Promoting the safe measurement and administration of liquid medicines via oral or enteral routes' (NPSA Alert 19).
Ruth Wakeman, NPA Information Department Manager said: "The template SOP covers the supply of suitable measuring devices when patients are supplied with oral liquid medicines to be administered via the oral or enteral route."
'Promoting safer measurement and administration of liquid medicines' is applicable directly for England and Wales, but the resource may also be of interest to pharmacy contractors from Scotland and Northern Ireland. The resource can be downloaded from http://www.npa.co.uk/members.
