Re-infecting pathogens are the latest target for infectious disease control methods. Historically, other infections that illicit life-long solid immunity have been controlled successfully using vaccination.
Mathematical techniques are well-established for such infections and have been used to design intervention strategies.
Until recently re-infecting pathogens have provided a greater public health challenge. Suitable chemotherapies are now becoming available for many re-infecting pathogens. Therefore it is essential to characterize the natural history of such infections so that suitable intervention strategies using the new generation of drugs can be designed and applied.
This research describes a method for this mathematical characterization.
