The Minister for Health and Children, Ms. Mary Harney T.D., is to introduce legislation to allow for the introduction of combined text and photo warnings on tobacco products.

The European Commission indicated in the 2001 Directive on the Manufacture, Presentation and Sale of Tobacco Products that they would adopt rules for the use of colour photographs to depict the health consequences of smoking. These provisions are set out in the Commission Decisions on the use of colour photographs as health warnings on tobacco packages. The Decisions are available here.

Submissions should be forwarded by post to Public Consultation, Tobacco Control Unit, Department of Health & Children, Hawkins House, Dublin 2 or by e-mail to tobaccoconsultation@health.irlgov.ie. Closing date for receipt of submissions is 5.30pm on Friday 20th June 2008.
