The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain's Chief Executive Jeremy Holmes launched the pharmacy RX Factor at the Branch Representatives' Meeting.
This exciting competition will identify four faces of pharmacy to support the Society's media campaigns. The winners will all receive professional media training and have the chance to represent the profession across national and regional media in four major campaigns in 2009.
Speaking about the initiative Jeremy Holmes said: "Our research has shown that members want pharmacy to have a higher profile in the media. During 2008 the Society has run a number of high level campaigns which have helped to raise the profile of the profession. It's now time to take this work to the next stage.
"Members will be familiar with media medics such as Dr Hillary Jones, Dr Rosemary Leonard and Dr Mark Porter, who provide expert opinion and advice on the health stories of the day. Through the RX Factor the Society will work to develop faces of pharmacy who can help ensure the profession's expert voice is heard across a range of health issues. "Our aim is to select four successful pharmacists to represent England, Wales, Scotland and Great Britain."
The announcement was met with enthusiasm from the Branches. Carole Lange, Leicestershire and Rutland Branch Committee Member, said:
"The profession really deserves a media savvy, authoritative, professional expert visible in the media - someone to provide a positive role model and a positive image for pharmacy. This is a marvellous idea and I congratulate the Society on the initiative."
Anyone who thinks they have the pharmacy RX Factor should send a colour passport photograph, a copy of their CV and 300 words about why they think they have the RX Factor to Kate Thatcher, PR and Membership Assistant, 1 Lambeth High Street, London SE1 7JN.
Candidates will need to have confidence, enthusiasm, charisma and personality, as well as a broad understanding of health issues.
For more information, go online to the Society's website at http://www.rpsgb.org and click on the RX Factor link. The closing date for applications is July 1 and shortlisted candidates will be contacted to arrange an interview, which are due to be held in early August. The winners will be announced at September's British Pharmaceutical Conference.
