Wesley L. Hicks Jr., MD, FACS, Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI), was honored as one of "America's Leading Doctors" in 2007 - 2008 by Black Enterprise (BE) (May 2008 issue) for his leadership in the field of otolaryngology.

In publishing the third annual listing of "American's Leading Doctors," Black Enterprise publisher, Earl Graves, Jr., noted in an accompanying editorial that he is "passionate about celebrating the professionalism, achievements and excellence of our nation's black physicians." BE editors continued, "We believe that this list exposing the black medical elite, as well as our ongoing health coverage, improves our readers' quality of life and helps them maneuver though the medical system."

The magazine recognized 140 African American physicians and surgeons from around the United States who specialize in neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, dermatology, urology, cardiology, pediatrics and oncology. The criterion for selection was recognition as a national leader in their particular field and certification by the American Board of Medical Specialties. BE editors also consulted and received recommendations from a number of professional organizations such as the National Medical Association, American Medical Association, Association of Black Cardiologists, and the American Cancer Society. Dr. Hicks is a professor of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery at RPCI, where he specializes in head and neck surgical oncology. He also serves as Director of the Head and Neck Surgical Fellowship Program at RPCI and is a professor of Neurosurgery at the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Dr. Hicks' research interests focus on tissue engineering, wound healing and mechanisms involved in wound repair. His laboratory is studying novel work in bioengineered devices for enhanced wound repair, the cellular microenvironment and tissue remodeling. Roswell Park Cancer Institute, founded in 1898, is the nation's first cancer research, treatment and education center and is the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in Upstate New York. RPCI is a member of the prestigious National Comprehensive Cancer Network, an alliance of the nation's leading cancer centers. Roswell Park has affiliate sites and collaborative programs both nationally and internationally.
