Leading Hobart dietitian Judy Seal has been honoured with a National Service Award by the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA).

The award, for outstanding contribution to the DAA and leadership in nutrition, was announced at the DAA national conference at the Gold Coast on May 30.

DAA President Julie Hulcombe said: 'Judy has made a great contribution to the DAA and the dietetics profession. She is a leader in the field of nutrition and is well-regarded as an authority in public health nutrition within Australia by fellow Accredited Practising Dietitians.'

Ms Seal has been an active member of the DAA since she graduated as a dietitian in 1986. 'Most recently, Judy led the team that organised our very successful national conference that was held in Hobart this time last year,' said Ms Hulcombe.

Ms Seal has previously been awarded Advanced Accredited Practising Dietitian status by the DAA, which recognises professional leadership in the field of nutrition and dietetics.

'I feel very touched and honoured as my nomination for this award was put forward by my passionate and committed nutrition colleagues in Tasmania for whom I have endless respect. It is these very same people who make it worthwhile contributing to the Association.

'I have always believed that you get out of an organisation what you contribute, and through my involvement with DAA I have made many professional connections both in Tasmania and Australia-wide that have lead to valuable working relationships as well as great friendships,' said Ms Seal.

Ms Seal currently works in Hobart, where she is the Principal Advisor, Public Health Nutrition at the Tasmanian Department of Health and Human Services. Her recent work has focussed on the iodine status of Tasmanians.

The Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA) is the professional body representing dietitians nationally. Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) is the only national credential recognised by the Australian Government, Medicare, the Department of Veterans Affairs and most private health funds as the quality standard for nutrition and dietetics services in Australia.
