UK Health secretary John Reid has said hospital managers will be held accountable in the drive to reduce MRSA infection rates in England. The number of blood stream infections caused by MRSA has risen by 3.6 per cent in the last year, taking the number of infections in 2003/04 to 7,647, from 7,384 in 2002/03.
'Front line staff like matrons will have more power to improve infection control,' said Mr Reid. 'We are also making it clear to hospital managers that they will be judged on their performance in reducing MRSA infection rates.'
The rise in infection rates is thought to have been caused by the increased use of invasive procedures, which can expose patients to infection, as well as poor hygiene practices and fuller hospital wards.
