Researchers studied the cases of permethrin poisoning in cats - which occurs when the animals are exposed to products originally meant for dogs.
Although often found in spot-on flea control products for both cats and dogs, permethrin is more toxic to cats.
As such, products containing permethrin have been specifically developed for exclusive use on either dogs or cats.
The effects of toxic poisoning include tremors, muscle fasciculation, seizures and even death.
The study calls for clearer labeling of pet products and pet owner education on attendant risks.
