ORLANDO, FL (UroToday.com) - Hoffman and colleagues examined 716 specimens of sporadic clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) for presence of IMP3 expression. 30% of tumors stained positive for this insulin-like growth factor-II mRNA binding protein.
Positive IMP3 status correlated to advanced stage, grade, and adverse pathologic features. Remarkably, a multivariate analysis that controlled for other unfavorable characteristics still showed that IMP3 expression imparted a 42% higher chance of dying from RCC.
One can envision that IMP3 and similar prognostic markers used in the context of a percutaneous 18-gauge biopsy, will someday guide management of small renal masses.
