Philip J. Schneider, M.S., FASHP, director of administrative and professional affairs at the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy in Phoenix and an international leader in advancing health-system pharmacy, has been named the recipient of ASHP's 2008 Harvey A.K. Whitney Lecture Award.
An active leader in health-system pharmacy practice, Schneider is noted for creating progressive, contemporary pharmacy practices and is considered an expert in medication use safety nationally and internationally. He also is well-regarded as a mentor to pharmacy students and pharmacy residents throughout his more than thirty years in the profession.
Schneider was until recently director of the Latiolais Leadership Program and clinical professor at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy, where his teaching and research were focused on improving the medication use process and improving medication-use safety. He developed a nationally recognized program for the reporting and analysis of adverse drug events that led to improvements in the medication use process at the Ohio State University Medical Center. The severity scale developed as part of this program is widely used in the health care industry, including serving as the basis for the system used by the United States Pharmacopeia.
In his new position at the University of Arizona Mr. Schneider will be responsible for implementing new academic programs at the college's Biomedical Campus in Phoenix, including a Pharm.D. program, innovative healthcare delivery services that include pharmacists, and translation of research discoveries into practice. He will design programs that will include more interdisciplinary education, practice and research with the colleges of medicine, nursing and public health and develop accredited postgraduate training programs for pharmacy residents and fellows.
Schneider is a past president of ASHP and the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (A.S.P.E.N.). He is also a widely published author who has written more than 100 articles and abstracts in professional and scientific journals and ten book chapters and edited seven books. He is a sought-after speaker and has made numerous presentations to both domestic and international audiences.
Mr. Schneider was the 2006 recipient of ASHP's Donald E. Francke Medal, which honors individuals who have made significant contributions to international pharmacy practice. He is past Secretary and newsletter editor of the Hospital Pharmacy Section of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) and served as chair of the Congress Planning Committee, and was a member of the FIP Board of Pharmacy Practice and Executive Committee.
ASHP has administered the Harvey A. K. Whitney Lecture Award, established in 1950 by the Southeastern Michigan Society of Hospital Pharmacists, since 1963. Harvey A. K. Whitney, ASHP's first president, was an editor, author, educator, practitioner, and leader in hospital pharmacy. Nominations for the award are made by past recipients and ASHP members. The winner is selected by a majority vote of past honorees.
Mr. Schneider will receive the award on June 10 during ASHP's Summer Meeting in Seattle.
