Main Category: Pharmacy / PharmacistArticle Date: 13 Jun 2008 - 7:00 PDT
Safeway on Wednesday launched a generic prescription drug discount program at stores in the eastern U.S. and the Chicago area, according to company spokesperson Greg TenEyck, the Washington Post reports. Under the program, Safeway stores in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., and the Chicago area will offer prescriptions of hundreds of generic medications for $4. The announcement of the program comes two years after Wal-Mart Stores and Target launched similar programs. TenEyck said that the company tested the program in Houston and Dallas in March (Mui, Washington Post, 6/11).

Sudden High Costs For Generic Prescriptions At CA Safeways
posted by Liane Falkenburg on 22 Jul 2008 at 3:22 pmI am very concerned that the Safeway pharmacy consumers in the Western US are subsidizing the new $4.00 generic costs for the Eastern US consumers. NOT FAIR!!
The local Safeway pharmacy only says the manufacturer of the generic sets the price and they have no control over it. My mother's generic prescription for Diltiazem CD 300MG, 30 tablets, has gone from $73.43 in April 2008 to $139.19 in July 2008.
I would appreciate hearing from Safeway Pharmacy officials in San Jose, CA.
