ORLANDO, FL (UroToday.com) - In this Level I prospective randomized study, either alfuzosin (10 mg) or tolterodine (4mg) per day, resulted in a statistically significant equal decrease in ureteral stent symptoms. However, the overall decrease for either drug was only 21%.

Of interest, but understandable, the pain index decreased more with alfuzosin ( a 50% drop) while the symptoms of bladder irritation decreased more with tolterodine (but only by 8-21%). Unfortunately, there was no arm in which both drugs were used.

In sum, among patients undergoing stent placement, complaints of discomfort could likely be addressed with alfuzosin rather than analgesics; unfortunately, complaints of irritative voiding symptoms can not be effectively addressed pharmacologically - for these patients only stent removal is of benefit.
