Elsevier announced a new partnership with the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) to publish its official online journal, Clinical Simulation in Nursing beginning with Volume 4:2 (July 2008). This innovative online only journal provides information about the development and advancement of nursing and health care through clinical simulation and educational technology as well as teaching strategies to promote excellence in clinical practice and education.
According to Cheryl Mee, MSN, MBA, RN, Vice President of Nursing & Health Professions Journals at Elsevier, "Simulation education is gaining wide acceptance as an increasing number of respected institutions establish and enhance simulation learning labs. Therefore we are pleased to be able to add a journal of this calibre to complement our nursing portfolio."
Jana Berryman, President, INACSL, is enthusiastic about the collaboration. "The newly formed partnership between the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning and Elsevier will enhance the nursing simulation profession and provide opportunities for this important work to gain international recognition."
Founded in 2005 (as Clinical Simulation in Nursing Education), Clinical Simulation in Nursing is designed to meet the needs of the entire scope of nursing and health care educators and clinicians involved with developing and implementing educational programs that use clinical simulation and technology. Among its primary objectives are enhancing patient-centered care and evidence-based practice and disseminating updated knowledge, guidelines, regulations, and legislative policies that impact nursing and health care education and practice.
"We envision that Clinical Simulation in Nursing will become an increasingly dynamic forum for information exchange about a wide range of topics in the field, from the use of simulation dummies to virtual reality, computer gaming in nursing, and who knows what the next big thing will be as we move forward," stated Suzie Kardong-Edgren, PhD, RN, WSU Intercollegiate College of Nursing and Interim Editor-in-Chief of the journal.
The new partnership with Elsevier has resulted in a number of important enhancements to Clinical Simulation in Nursing. The publication schedule has increased to six issues per year. The publishing process has been streamlined using Elsevier's article submission system (http://ees.elsevier.com/nursingsimulation) and circulation of electronic proofs for review. Articles, both in HTML and PDF formats, are now enhanced with hyperlinked URLs and references. The electronic format enables content like videos to be included.
Elsevier anticipates that Clinical Simulation in Nursing will be included in major medical and nursing abstracting and indexing services in the near future, including Mosby's Nursing Index. Further, access to the journal will be opened up to non-members of the Association and libraries and online availability of the journal will be extended via placement on Elsevier's full-text platforms, ScienceDirect and Journals Consult. These factors, combined with the journal's rapid publication schedule, mean that contributing authors can be confident that their work will be disseminated rapidly to the widest possible audience.
In fall 2008, Elsevier will launch the Simulation Learning System (SLS) that provides step-by-step instruction for integrating simulation technology in your nursing curriculum. The SLS includes 30 scenarios that correspond to an Elsevier textbook and can be integrated into any simulator.
