Notes
Radiotherapy is the use of ionising radiation to treat cancer and some non malignant conditions. In many types of cancer, radiotherapy is now the first choice curative treatment, and in others, radiotherapy is used to enhance the effectiveness of surgery or drug based therapy, as well as being used in palliative care to relieve symptoms associated with cancer.
The European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO) was founded in 1980 and today, with more than 7.000 members, the society promotes Radiology among all disciplines in cancer treatment and research.
ESTRO provides educational and continuing professional development programmes to oncologists and also disseminates research results, organises meetings and conferences for all professionals involved in delivering Radiotherapy - radio- therapists, biologists, physicists and oncology nurses - to improve patient care.
