The physicians of America will convene today to begin a second day of voting on proposals that will define the medical profession's stand on emerging issues in health care.

During the final two days of the American Medical Association's Annual Meeting, physicians will participate in a grassroots democratic forum designed to create a national physician consensus on government legislation, public health, science, technology and medical practice in the United States. This consensus results in policies that become the driving force behind the AMA's advocacy programs.

Policies related to the following issues will likely be voted on today:

- Health effects of high fructose syrup
- Personal medication supply in times of disaster
- Simplified nutritional rating system for processed foods
- Elder mistreatment
- Medical student debt burden and its impact on the physician shortage

The AMA House of Delegates will convene for voting this morning at 9:00 a.m. (CT) in the Grand Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Chicago. This legislative session is expected to proceed until 3:00 p.m. (CT). Additional proposals will be called for a vote tomorrow morning during the final business session of the AMA House of Delegates.

The AMA House of Delegates is open to members of the press. To arrange for press credentials, or to receive additional details, please contact the AMA Pressroom at: (312) 239-4991.
