The CCA has issued its initial response to today's announcement that a significant deal has been reached by the Government and the pharmaceutical industry on parts of the new Pharmaceutical Price Regulation Scheme.
Rob Darracott, CCA CEO comments:
"How these price changes play through the supply chain is the issue of fundamental importance for our members. January is the worst time for pharmacy to have to deal with prices changes, right after the busy Christmas period when stocks are high.
We will be calling for early and extensive talks between the PSNC and the Department of Health about the impact the changes will have on pharmacy. This package will impact differently on patent and off patent brands and will affect the markets for generics and PIs differently as well. Above all, our concern is to assure continuing access for patients to their prescription medicines. We have experience in the past of how badly managed price changes can lead to drug shortages. Pharmacy should not be penalised for ensuring continuity of supply."
