The Deputy State Coroner of Western Australia, Evelyn Vicker, has advised aged carers to ignore requests by euthanasia groups.

This request follows the choking death of an 85 year-old woman, Kathleen Parsons. She died in a nursing home in Busselton, Australia.

A yellow card had been given to the nursing home. It is known as a living will (advanced directive). Mrs Parsons had signed the card, it was endorsed by the Voluntary Euthanasia Society.

The Deputy Coroner said that the card could have confused the carers who knew about the instructions. She said that staff had to be clearly directed to leave such instructions up to doctors and family members. A carer should always treat choking as a medical emergency, she said.
