AACR Seeks Submissions For 2008 Susan G. Komen For The Cure - AACR Outstanding Investigator Award For Breast Cancer Research

The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), in partnership with Susan G. Komen for the Cure, is currently accepting nominations for the 2008 Susan G. Komen for the Cure- AACR Outstanding Investigator Award for Breast Cancer Research.

A result of the new partnership between AACR and the Cancer Therapy and Research Center (CTRC) at the University of Texas Health Science Center to jointly present the CTRC-AACR San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium in 2008, the Outstanding Investigator Award for Breast Cancer Research will recognize an investigator whose novel and significant work has had, or may have, a far-reaching impact on the etiology, detection, diagnosis, treatment or prevention of breast cancer.

Advances in breast cancer research potentially arise from all scientific disciplines and AACR hopes to receive nominations from a variety of research areas.

Nominations are open to all basic, translational and clinical cancer researchers and individual investigators who are affiliated with any institution involved in basic cancer research, cancer medicine, or cancer-related biomedical science anywhere in the world. The award honors investigators relatively early in their careers, therefore, nominees must be no more than 50 years old at the time the award is received. The award winner will deliver a 30-minute lecture about his or her research at the 2008 CTRC-AACR San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, December 10-14, 2008.

Through the new partnership between AACR and CTRC, Susan G. Komen for the Cure will help support significant accomplishments in breast cancer research, enhance the education and training of young scientists, provide a bridge for collaboration and interaction between basic scientists and clinicians, and introduce an outstanding corps of investigators to breast cancer research.

Along with the Outstanding Investigator Award, Susan G. Komen for the Cure will support three additional new initiatives in conjunction with the CTRC-AACR San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. In an effort to educate basic scientists and clinicians about the latest advances in each other's fields, Susan G. Komen for the Cure will sponsor the CTRC-AACR San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium Educational Sessions, addressing emerging targets, signal transduction pathways controlling cell proliferation and cell death in breast cancer, clinical trials and pathobiology.

Additional support from Komen will fund the Susan G. Komen for the Cure-AACR Scholar-in-Training Awards and Minority Scholar Awards for Breast Cancer Research. These awards aim to expand the pool of researchers contributing new and innovative ideas to breast cancer research.
