Society Participates In Examine Your Future Careers Fair, UK

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain's Careers Service attended the second Examine Your Future careers fair on 20 June, organised jointly by NHS Careers and UCAS.

Held at the Business Design Centre in Islington, London, the event was specifically targeted at year-11 and -12 students with a strong interest in science and medicine. The Society featured a stand and was busy throughout the day with students enthusiastic to learn more about a career in pharmacy.

Nearly 60 exhibitors representing different areas of medical and science career paths were present, including 8 of the 24 universities that currently have pharmacy schools. The event was attended by students from over 150 schools, as well as careers organisations and advisors.

The fair was also an opportunity for NHS careers, the recruitment arm of the NHS to promote their new website http://www.stepintothenhs.nhs.uk, aimed specifically at 14-19 year olds interested in pursuing a career in the NHS. The website features information provided by the Society on becoming a community pharmacist.

James Wood MRPharmS, Past-President of the British Pharmaceutical Students' Association and Secretary of the Society's Huddersfield and District Branch, ran two workshop sessions called A day in the life of a community pharmacist. The workshop gave the students some insight in to the variety, challenges and rewards of being a pharmacist and concluded with a hands-on demonstration for blood pressure testing.

Commenting on the fair, James Wood said: "I had a really enjoyable day and thought it was a very valuable event for the Society. It was fantastic to promote pharmacy to over 100 students and careers advisors at the workshops, and the stand provided an ideal opportunity to speak with students who might not otherwise have considered pharmacy as a career".

The Society's Careers Service aims to encourage 13 to 17 year olds to consider studying for a Masters degree in pharmacy as a first step towards a career in pharmacy.
