What

CAPITAL Foundation is holding the first of two 16-hour training courses to fill the need for certified anger management and family violence counseling that is culturally and linguistically appropriate for the Asian Pacific Islander (API) community in Sacramento. Anger management counseling is central to the 52-week Batters' Treatment Program (BTP), which California state law mandates for anyone convicted of domestic violence offenses in Sacramento.

"Currently, there is not one single provider in Sacramento who offers a culturally and linguistically appropriate 52-week BTP for the API community," said CAPITAL Foundation President Alice Wong, "CAPITAL Foundation's Prism Project is providing a first of its kind, anger management and family violence counseling training for API service and mental health providers with the goal of ensuring there is a 52-week BTP for the API community that the courts can send the offenders to attend. The overall aim is to reduce domestic violence and family violence through primary intervention and prevention."

With funding support from sponsors that include Kaiser Permanente and Teichert Foundation, CAPITAL Foundation is subsidizing this first ever training. Participants in the training come from API service and mental health providers and counseling services throughout Sacramento, including Child Protective Services (CPS), Asian Pacific Community Counseling (APCC), Southeast Asian Assistance Center, and TOFA of Sacramento.

Said Judy Heary, Executive Director of APCC, "For nearly three years, APCC has collaborated with the CAPITAL Foundation Prism Project to identify ways to prevent domestic violence in the API community. I am proud that our organization is part of this historic training and filling a service sorely lacking for the API community."
