Dr Sarah Cant, Policy Manager at Breakthrough Breast Cancer, says:
"This review looks at whether breast screening might be improved in the future by targeting women at higher than average genetic risk of breast cancer. It raises interesting questions about how information on risk could be used to help decide who is eligible for screening. However, breast cancer risk is affected by lifestyle and environment as well as genetics. These also need to be taken into account when determining risk.
"Over 80% of breast cancers occur in women over the age of 50 who are entitled to free NHS breast screening. However mammography is known to be less effective in younger women due to their dense breast tissue so for younger women, newer techniques such as digital mammography will be increasingly important."
