Reported from the Annual Meeting of the American Urological Association

ORLANDO, FL (UroToday.com) - Several concepts regarding potential treatment alternatives for neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO) were presented.

Arginase inhibition was shown to suppress DO in rats with SCI by the Pittsburgh group (Abstract #1015).

Another report from France suggested the potential for ATP-sensitive potassium channel (KATP) openers for treatment of NDO (Abstract #1023). This was based on their findings that spontaneous phasic contractions in NDO were modulated by potassium rather than calcium channels, the latter of which has been shown to play a role in patients with idiopathic overactive bladder and normal controls.

ABST #1023: KATP but not BKCa Channels are Involved in the Regulation of Myogenic Spontaneous Phasic Contractile Acitivity in Human Detrusor from Neurogenic Patients
Stephanie Oger, MD, et al.

Presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Urological Association (AUA) - May 17 - 22, 2008. Orange County Convention Center - Orlando, Florida, USA.
