ORLANDO, FL (UroToday.com) - In this presentation, Dr. John Mulhall, et al. examined practice patterns for the treatment of Peyronie's disease (PD) via a 46 point questionnaire sent to US urologists.

The questionnaire was returned by 639 urologists of whom 67% were private practice physicians and 33% were from academic centers. 76% practiced general urology and 40% considered themselves experts in sexual medicine. 78% said they were trained in PD management and 73% were trained in PD surgery during residency. First line treatment was oral agents in 72% with Vitamin E being the most common. Verapamil is used transdermally by 27% and via injection by 45%.

Interestingly, 79% perform surgery for PD with most, 70%, doing plications and 73% doing excision and grafting, and 61% doing implant surgery. This abstract is worth review to shed light on practice patterns in the US - some that will surprise the reader.

Presented by John P. Mulhall, MD, et al, at the Annual Meeting of the American Urological Association (AUA) - May 17 - 22, 2008. Orange County Convention Center - Orlando, Florida, USA.
