Prospective Randomized Controlled Double Blind Trial Of Shock Wave Therapy (SWT) Vs. Sham Treatment In Men With Peyronie's Disease

ORLANDO, FL (UroToday.com) - This study from from the UK may have put to rest the use of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) for the treatment of Peyronie's Disease plaques.

A prospective, randomized, double-blind trial that was designed to objectively assess the true effect of shock wave therapy (SWT) on PD. A total of 39 men were recruited for the trail, 19 men received SWT, 20 acted as controls. Each patient received 6 weekly treatments of either SWT or sham. Patients had a mean age of 59 years, a palpable plaque, and a mean duration of disease of 24 months.

The results showed that the men in the control group had improvement in the dorsal and lateral curvature of 5.3 and 3.5 degrees and for the SWT group and improvement of 0.9 and 0.3 degrees. There was no improvement in penile length in the SWT or the control group. The mean change in IIEF scores were 0.1 in the controls and 0.56 in the SWT group. Lastly, in the global assessment questionnaire, 5 of 19 men noticed improvement in the SWT group while 6 of 20 in the control group showed improvement. One man in each group showed worsening and the rest showed no change.
