ORLANDO, FL (UroToday.com) - There were many interesting presentations this year.

Highlights included PSA follow-up protocols after radical prostatectomy, predictors of incontinence after prostate surgery, adjuvant radiation therapy, and high-intensity frequency ultrasound for the treatment of focal prostate cancer.

Abstracts 553 and 556 showed that for patients with low risk prostate cancer (organ-confined, Gleason 6 prostate cancer) after radical prostatectomy the risk of a rising PSA is very low and does not occur before 3 years after surgery. For patients with intermediate or high-risk prostate cancer, the PSA recurrence is higher. Therefore, for low-risk prostate cancer the PSA can be obtained every 2-3 years and for intermediate to high-risk disease yearly.

Dr. Swanson reported the long-term survival results from SWOG 8794, a randomized study of adjuvant radiation therapy vs. observation in patients with locally advanced prostate cancer after radical prostatectomy. At a median of 14 years, there was a metastases-free and overall survival advantage for adjuvant radiation therapy.

Abstracts 1158 and 1161 detailed the effectiveness of high-intensity frequency ultrasound for focal prostate cancer treatment. Approximately, 27% of post- HIFU prostate biopsies will show residual cancer. This percentage needs to decrease before HIFU can be used as treatment for prostate cancer.

Finally, abstract 1779 showed that age was the best determinant of post-radical prostatectomy continence, even after controlling for blood loss, type of surgery, and pathologic stage.

Presented by Adam Kibel, MD, at the Annual Meeting of the American Urological Association (AUA) - May 17 - 22, 2008. Orange County Convention Center - Orlando, Florida, USA.
