ORLANDO, FL (UroToday.com) - Tolterodine and an alpha blocker provides superior relief from urgency and frequency compared to either medication alone. In addition, initial results from the ComBAT trial were presented. The combination of a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor and an alpha blocker is superior to either one alone at the 2 year mark.
Tadalafil at either the 5, 10, or 20mg dose provides LUTS relief. On average, patients had a 4.0 to 5.0 point improvement in their AUASS. LUTS relief was not dependent on the erectile function of the patient.
Patients who are in urinary retention need urethral catheterization for 3 days with concomitant alpha blocker therapy.
A multi-institutional study evaluating microwave technology showed a 50% improvement in symptoms and quality of life indicators. However, 22% of patients needed medications and 32% had failed therapy at 5 years.
Abstract 1827 described the Lithium-triborite laser. This laser was very effective at eliminating BPH tissue with little charing. There was a 50% reduction in prostate volume and a concomitant improvement in flow rates.
Finally, a randomized trial suggested that HoLAP was similar to TURP in resolving LUTS symptoms.
Presented by Claus Roehrborn, MD, at the Annual Meeting of the American Urological Association (AUA) - May 17 - 22, 2008. Orange County Convention Center - Orlando, Florida, USA.
