ORLANDO, FL (UroToday.com) - Abstract 1791 showed the importance of a repeat TURBT for T1 grade 3 tumors. If there is no residual tumor (NRT) on the repeat TURBT patients do much better than if there is residual tumor (SRT).

NRT - Recurrence 17% - Progression 10% - DFS 78%
SRT - Recurrence 45% - Progression 23% - DFS 50%

Abstract 1695 showed that 60% of all bladder cancer deaths occur within the first 2 years of diagnosis. African-Americans and women were more likely to die from cancer than Caucasians or men. The investigators found that tumor characteristics accounted for half of the excess mortality seen in African-Americans and women.

Abstract 1699 suggested that routine metastatic surveillance after radical cystectomy did not lead to an improved survival rate compared to patients imaged when they were symptomatic. Upper tracts need to be evaluated.

Abstract 1793 reported the natural history of CIS that completely responds to BCG.

As seen below, 14% of patients died from bladder cancer at 10 years despite a complete response to BCG.

5-years - Recurrence-free 64% - Progression-free 79% - Cancer-specific survival 90%
10-years - Recurrence-free 54% - Progression-free 77% - Cancer-specific survival 86%

Abstract 1555 revealed that laparoscopic cystectomy had few advantages over open radical cystectomy. Laparoscopic cystectomy took longer but had less blood loss. There were no differences in short-term or in-hospital parameters.
