Hematopoiesis is the process responsible for blood cell formation. At the root of this process lie hematopoietic stem cells.

The demands for hematopoietic output vary across mammals, where the number of active hematopoietic stem cells scales with mass. Hematopoietic stem cells can be linked with the circulating blood with a model based on human data.

By combining these two models, we determined hematopoietic output for various mammals.

The close correlation with experimental data, support the notion that hematopoiesis emerged once in evolution and has a similar architecture across all mammals.
