Planned Parenthood To Run Ads Criticizing McCain Response About Insurance Coverage For Contraception

The Planned Parenthood Action Fund will begin airing ads today criticizing Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) for his response to a question on insurance coverage for birth control, The Politico's "Ben Smith's Blog" reports. According to "Ben Smith's Blog," the ad shows McCain's "evident discomfort" when asked whether it is "unfair" that some insurance companies cover Viagra but not birth control. McCain has voted against an amendment that would have required insurance companies that cover prescription drugs to include coverage for birth control, arguing that such a mandate would increase health care costs.

PPAF spokesperson Tait Sye said the group will begin running the ads during Bravo's "Project Runway," Lifetime's "Army Wives" and "Oprah" in Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, New Mexico, Ohio, Wisconsin and Washington, D.C. Sye would not say how much the group is spending on the ad (Smith, "Ben Smith's Blog," The Politico, 7/16). Roll Call reports that PPAF made a television ad buy worth $21,880 in cable markets serving 26 mostly Midwestern cities (Drucker, Roll Call, 7/15).
