Mervi Jokinen Practice and Standards Development Adviser at the Royal College of Midwives (RCM), said: "The RCM always welcomes information to support informed choice. As induction of labour is one of the most common interventions in pregnancy - on average 1 in 5 women undergo an induction in England - they will be important to women and professionals alike.

"These guidelines will ensure that midwives are equipped to give the most current and consistent information to the women they care for. This in turn means that women have the quality information on which to base their decisions, enabling them to have more control over their labour and to make the choices that are right for them."

The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) aims to promote and advance the profession of the midwife. The RCM represents over 95% of the UK's midwives and is one of the world's oldest and one of the largest midwifery organisations, and celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2006. It is also a trade union.
