The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain's Council agreed to various minor changes to the new non-referral threshold criteria which have been in operation since 3 June 2008.

Council agreed in its June meeting to a set of proposals allowing less serious complaints against pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to be dealt with via the Society's Inspectorate rather than being referred to its Investigating Committee.

Since this time, the Society's Fitness to Practise team has been working to implement operating procedures for managing cases which fall within this category. This work identified that various aspects of the threshold criteria required further clarification from Council.

These issues were considered by Council and included:

- Widening the scope of the single one-off dispensing error category to include cases involving the supply of date-expired medication
- Allowing other members of the investigative team (in addition to Inspectors) to investigate certain types of cases which could fall within the threshold criteria
- Clarification on whether the example cases listed in the threshold criteria framework are exclusive
- Amendments to wording in the "proposed action" section of the threshold criteria

- Clarification on the process for managing complex complaints where some of the allegations fall within the non-referral criteria and some of the allegations fall outside the criteria Council agreement to these changes will allow the Society to continue to refine the processes for managing non-referral cases and will ensure that these cases can be managed efficiently and effectively in the future.
