All Aboard For Rehabilitation Lecture With Dr Nick Carter, UK

On 9th September 2008 medical professionals are invited to Southampton for a PGEA accredited education event aboard Lord Nelson, an impressive 55 meter tall ship that is also fully accessible, giving them a unique insight into the Jubilee Sailing Trust, an organisation that has been leading the disability rehabilitation field for the last 30 years.

The lecture, entitled 'Rehab: Is it Always Plain Sailing?' will be presented by Dr Nick Carter. Dr Carter, who was recently appointed consultant in Rheumatology and Rehabilitation to Headley Court, Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre will talk about rehabilitation in the 21st century.

Integral to the lecture, participants will also be able to observe at first hand the unique facilities aboard Lord Nelson which enable crew members to share the adventure of sailing a tall ship regardless of physical ability.

Both Lord Nelson, launched in 1986 and her sister ship Tenacious, launched in 2000 have been designed and built to enable both able bodied and disabled individuals to sail side by side as equals.

The accessibly of both Lord Nelson and Tenacious is something that the Trust is duly proud. Medical professionals from a wide range of disciplines never fail to be impressed by the facilities aboard these ships. Dr Tony Hicklin, former Consultant in Rehabilitation to the Queen Elizabeth Foundation for the Disabled said, "I have spent my professional life in rehabilitation and I think that my involvement with Lord Nelson has been my most effective contribution to that speciality."

The Trust operates both Lord Nelson and Tenacious 46 weeks a year on voyages to destinations ranging from Northern Europe to the Caribbean Islands as well as a number of voyages starting from and ending in the UK.

The event starts at 7.00pm and will finish at 9.30pm.On arrival drinks and nibbles will be served, followed by an evening meal after the presentation.
