A couple who had a wheezing parrot, gave up smoking six weeks ago because the veterinarian told them their beloved pet was suffering from the consequences of passive smoking.
The bird, an African Orange Wing Parrot, had a blocked nose and was wheezing all the time.
Like any concerned pet owner, they took it to the vet. Glen Courquer (the vet) told them the parrot needed better quality air - all that smoke around it was not doing it any good.
So, Kevin Barclay and Sharon Wood promptly gave up smoking.
Mr. Barclay said that they stopped for the sake of their pet. Two weeks after they stopped smoking the parrot got better.
The couple used to smoke 55 cigarettes a day between them.
The vet at first wondered whether the parrot's problem might have been due to some aerosol or perfume. By a process of elimination he decided the problem was passive smoking.
Mr Cousquer said that birds are very sensitive to smoky air.
