We have seen the number of babies delivered at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital (CHBH) Maternity increase from 15,385 in 1998 to more than 23,000 in 2007. This represents an increase of more than 49% in that time period. An audit was conducted to determine which deliveries truly needed to happen at CHBH, leading to the introduction of the Triage Referral Programme in the maternity unit. Triage is used to ensure the right patient receives the right treatment that can provide for the patient's needs effectively. In the case of pregnant women this system will be used to sort between high and low risk pregnancies.

How does this affect you:

- Pregnant women must first visit their local clinics early in their pregnancies.

- Women with high risk pregnancies will be referred to CHBH by the local clinics, where they will receive the appropriate treatment.

- Pregnant women who arrive at CHBH and are not high risk cases will be assessed and referred to their closest local clinic.

The Triage Referral Programme was launched in the spirit of Project Phenduka where the hospital is striving to ensure the provision of world-class healthcare through improved service delivery. We are successfully referring on average 4 women per day to Lillian Ngoyi and Mofolo Commnity Healthcare Centres as a pilot. We have completed the renovations for the Triage area at CHBH to ensure "Caring Hearts Continue To Bring Hope".
