House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) in an interview with C-SPAN's "Q and A" Sunday said that her support for abortion rights has not conflicted with her requests to receive Holy Communion in the Roman Catholic Church, as it has for other lawmakers, The Hill reports. During an interview with "Q & A" host Brian Lamb, she was asked to comment on opposition from Catholic Church officials to allowing lawmakers to receive Communion who support abortion rights -- including Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R), who both ran for president.
Pelosi in the interview said, "I think some of it is regional. It depends on the bishop of a certain region and fortunately for me, communion has not been withheld, and I'm a regular communicant so that would be a severe blow to me if that were the case." The Hill reports that Pelosi did not speak directly about how her views on abortion conflict with those of the Catholic Church. She said there are many issues that the Catholic Church cares about, noting that the Bible mentions poverty more than 2,000 times (Cusack, The Hill, 8/3). Pelosi was one of several Catholic lawmakers who support abortion rights to receive received Communion in April during a Mass celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI in Washington, D.C. (Daily Women's Health Policy Report, 4/18).

The Holy Father Said Not To Vote For Politians Who Support Abortion
posted by Ed on 5 Aug 2008 at 8:52 amThe Holy Father (The Pope) said not to vote for politicians who support abortion.
Hypocrites
posted by Richard Griffiths on 6 Aug 2008 at 7:42 amUntil they stop protecting the predator and condemning the victim, I have absolutely no time for the church. If a priest, and there are loads, abuses young children sexually, the church should not move him to another church, or hide him in the Vatican. They have no right to say anything. Shame!!
The Phony 'Catholic' Church
posted by Elaine on 6 Aug 2008 at 9:05 amThe reason Pelosi and other 'Catholic' politicians confidently believe they can support abortion and still be "good Catholics" is they belong to the phony Vatican II church which is not Catholic in any sense of traditional teaching of the Catholic faith.
If she belonged to the true Catholic Church where it's leaders practiced and taught the true faith, she and all others who publicly defend, advocate and promote the most vile avenues of the destruction of human beings would have been excommunicated long ago.
Hypocrite Is Wrong
posted by w1952 on 7 Aug 2008 at 1:01 pmThe John Jay School of Criminolgy studied the sex abuse issue and found that public school teachers are more likely to abuse young people than priests are. I guess that means you won't send you child to a public school. That 3% of priests did terrible things is horriic, but if that is enough to get you to leave the Catholic Church, then had you lived 2000 yrs ago you wouldn't have been a Christian. Afterall, of the first 12 apostles, one sold Jesus's identity, one denied Him three times, and all but one refused to attend the crucifiction from fear of being associated with Him. That's 11 out of 12 apostles. 3% doesn't seem so bad anymore, does it?
Myth #1: Catholic Priests Are More Likely To Be Pedophiles Than Other Groups Of Men.
posted by Jack Haefner on 7 Aug 2008 at 6:42 pmThis is just plain false. There's absolutely no evidence that priests are more likely to
abuse children than are other groups of men. The use and abuse of children as
objects for the sexual gratification of adults is epidemic in all classes, professions,
religions, and ethnic communities across the globe, as figures on child pornography,
incest, and child prostitution make abundantly clear. Pedophilia (the sexual abuse of
a prepubescent child) among priests is extremely rare, affecting only 0.3% of the
entire population of clergy. This figure, cited in the book Pedophiles and Priests by
non-Catholic scholar, Philip Jenkins, is from the most comprehensive study to date,
which found that only one out of 2,252 priests considered over a thirty-year period
was afflicted with pedophilia. In the recent Boston scandal, only four of the more than eighty priests labeled by
the media as "pedophiles" are actually guilty of molesting young children.
Pedophilia is a particular type of compulsive sexual disorder in which an adult (man or woman) abuses
prepubescent children. The vast majority of the clerical sex-abuse scandals now coming to light do not involve
pedophilia. Rather, they involve ephebophilia — homosexual attraction to adolescent boys. While the total
number of sexual abusers in the priesthood is much higher than those guilty of pedophilia, it still amounts to
less than 2 percent — comparable to the rate among married men (Jenkins, Pedophiles and Priests).
In the wake of the current crisis in the Church, other religious denominations and non-religious institutions
have admitted to having similar problems with both pedophilia and ephebophilia among the ranks of their
clergy. There's NO evidence that Catholic prelates are more likely to be pedophiles than Protestant ministers,
Jewish leaders, physicians, or any other institution in which adults are in a position of authority and power
over children. In fact, the rate is DOUBLE among public school teachers and officials--this is the crime we should also be outraged at!!!
Great Post, Jack
posted by fw1952 on 8 Aug 2008 at 8:08 pmGreat post, Jack. The media is paranoid about calling the offending priests homosexuals as it may harm the cause of promoting homosexuality as just another acceptable alternate lifestyle. And by characterizing offending homosexuals under another category, FBI criminal statistics reflect a artificially low crime rate for homosexuals, allowing advocacy groups to market the group more positively.
Pedophile Priests In The Church - Who Knows How Many?
posted by Ex Rev. name witheld on 8 Aug 2008 at 10:06 pmIt is impossible to know how many pedophile priests in the church today, and throughout history, there are or there have been.
The reason is a simple one -
The church has and will never let us know. In most cases their names are not revealed - and in many cases they are protected from public scrutiny. So, it is impossible to know whether pedophilia is more prevalent in the church or outside - isn't it?
Homosexuals, Not Pedophiles
posted by fw1952 on 10 Aug 2008 at 4:58 pmEx rev,
No matter how many times you try and classify them as pedophiles, they are homosexuals who were ordained during the turbulent yrs of the 60's through 80's. That time is over, and the priest ordained today are better, more conservative, and more obedient.
Semantics And Splitting Hairs
posted by Eduardo Ramirez on 11 Aug 2008 at 12:18 amI live in a Catholic third world country. Whether they are pedophile or 'homosexuals' is splitting hairs - if they sexually abuse boys, very young boys, they are pedophiles. There is no wriggling out of that, not matter how hard you try to paint the picture rosy.
And believe me, they thrive in the third world today!!
