A bioterrorism expert, whose homes have been searched for anthrax by the FBI, denies having anything to do with anthrax attacks. The police reported that Dr K Berry says that he has nothing to do with the anthrax attacks.
Two of Dr. K Berry's homes, one he owns now and the other he used to own, were searched by more than thirty FBI agents last Thursday. The houses were in Wellsville, New York. His parents' home was also searched.
Although the FBI said he is not connected with the attacks, they would not say why they have been searching his homes.
Five people were killed, and 17 became ill, as a result of being in contact with envelopes which had been laced with anthrax. The letters were posted to government offices (and news media offices). For three years the authorities have been at a loss as to what happened.
Last Thursday evening, after the raids, Dr. K Berry allegedly assaulted four family members. He was charged with assault. This took place at a motel in New Jersey. Those allegedly assaulted needed medical treatment. He had to pay a $10,000 bail to get out of jail.
Dr. K Berry founded a company which aimed to prepare doctors and medical professionals in case of a chemical/biological attack. The system he devised, identification of chemical/biological strikes - he wanted to patent. This happened in 1997.
In 2001, he registered a provisional patent. This was in September 28, 2001. The first anthrax letters were postmarked ten days before this. He promoted his system as one of the best ways to respond to a bioterrorism attack.
Dr. K Berry had been charged in the past with forgery. Once, he resigned from a job as Director of Emergency Services at Jones Memorial Hospital, Wellsiville - he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct to settle charges of forgery.
