CMV Disease In Stem Cell Transplantation: Prevention And Drug Resistance

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in recipients of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The clinical manifestations of CMV disease are serious and range from gastrointestinal disease to life-threatening pneumonia, myelosuppression, retinitis, and encephalitis.

In order to prevent CMV infection and reduce CMV drug resistance, it is vital that healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients understand current strategies for management of CMV, including prophylaxis and treatment. To address the need for education on CMV management, Robert Michael Educational Institute LLC (RMEI) and Postgraduate Institute for Medicine (PIM) have jointly sponsored a free continuing education monograph for physicians and clinical pharmacists.

Faculty authors for this activity include infectious disease experts Michael J. Boeckh, MD, from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, Washington and Sunwen Chou, MD, from the Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon.
