Today's Vice Presidential nomination of Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin, mother of a child with Down syndrome, brings national attention to the approximately 350,000 individuals with Down syndrome living in the United States.
The Down Syndrome Research and Treatment Foundation (DSRTF), a nonprofit organization in existence since 2004, is the leading private source of funding for Down syndrome cognitive research in the US.
Groundbreaking research results made possible as a result of DSRTF support have provided promise that cognitive issues, involving memory, learning and language, as well as Alzheimer's disease, can now be addressed for individuals with Down syndrome.
The research that DSRTF supports also has a direct and broad applicability to the general population, particularly regarding the study of atherosclerotic disease and solid tumor cancers, such as breast and colon cancer.

Palin Cut Funding For Special Needs Children
posted by Sarah Jones on 6 Sep 2008 at 12:20 amI wish you had included the fact that while Palin said she would represent children with special needs, her policies and actions speak loudly to the contrary. She cut special needs funding in schools in Alaska by 62%. Parents who are trying to cope with special needs children need to know where the candidates put their money, not what their rhetoric is. And it is ironically community organizers, whom Palin mocked so viciously in her speech, who step in to help overwhelmed parents. It is vitally important to inform ourselves of the facts and policies of these candidates, and not to assume because they spoke about something or told us they cared about it, that they plan on doing anything about it. McCain's veto of the benefits for the veterans is another medical issue impacting families in this country right now.
Thank you for your attention to this importance issue
