As the pregnant population begins to include a greater number of more complex cases, this seminar will consider how to provide appropriate care and intervention in high-risk situations to make care safer not only for women at high risk, but for the population as a whole. Speakers will focus on topics including how to develop an obstetric early warning system, emergency drills and processes of care to reduce risk.

Practical training workshops

The seminar offers you an opportunity to participate in one of two practical training workshops.

- Building skills, designing tools, saving lives, a workshop looking at how to develop your skills in order to recognise, assess and act in emergency situations.
Professor James Walker, Lead, Baby Lifeline Training Initiative, and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Leeds University.

- PRactical Obstetric Multi-Professional Training (PROMPT), a practical workshop covering the management of emergency obstetric situations.
Dr Tim Draycott, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Southmead Hospital.

Speakers will include:

- Alison Bartholomew, Risk Management Director, NHS Litigation Authority, on the development of Maternity Clinical Risk Management Standards.

- Dr Margaret Blott, Vice-President, Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and, Richard Congdon, Chief Executive, Confidential Enquiry into Maternal and Child Health, on implementing the recommendations from CEMACH's report, Saving Mother's Lives.

- Dawn Durham, Supervisor of Midwives, and Jackie Hogan, Nurse Consultant Critical Care, Maternity Unit, The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, on developing an obstetric early warning system.

- Keynote speaker, Dr Zoe Penn, Clinical Director for the Women's and Children's Directorate, Consultant Obstetrician, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, will present the key findings on working in high-risk situations from our inquiry, Safe Births: Everybody's business.
