Researchers in Spain have discovered that a cannabis extract makes brain tumors shrink by halting the growth of blood vessels that supply the tumors with life. Cannabis has chemicals called cannabinoids, these are the chemicals that could effectively starve tumors to death, say the researchers.
The study was carried out at the Complutense University, Madrid, Spain.
The team used mice to demonstrate that the cannabinoids block vessel growth.
You can read about this latest research in the journal Cancer Research.
Apparently, the procedure is also effective in humans.
The Spanish team, led by Dr Manuel Guzmán, wanted to see whether they could prevent glioblastoma multiforme cancer from growing by cutting off its blood supply. Glioblastoma multiforme is one of the most difficult cancers to treat - it seldom responds to any medical intervention, such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery.
The scientists knew that cannabinoids will block the growth of blood vessels (to tumors) in mice - they wanted to find out whether the same thing would happen with humans.
The mice were given a cancer similar to the human brain cancer (glioblastoma multiforme). The mice were then given cannabinoids and the genes examined.
The genes associated with blood vessel growth in tumors through the production of a chemical called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) had their activity reduced.
Cannabinoids halt VEGF production by producing Ceramide. Ceramide controls cell death.
Dr Guzmán said: "As far as we know, this is the first report showing that ceramide depresses VEGF pathway by interfering with VEGF production."
They then wanted to see if this would also happen with humans.
They selected two patients who had glioblastoma multiforme and had not responded to chemotherapy, radiotherapy or surgery. The scientists took samples from them before and after treating them with a cannabinoids solution - this was administered directly into the tumor.
Amazingly, both patients experienced reduced VEGF levels in the tumor as a result of treatment with cannabinoids.
The researchers said that the results were encouraging. In order to be sure about their findings they need to carry out a larger study, they said.
Dr Guzmán said "The present findings provide a novel pharmacological target for cannabinoid-based therapies."

War on drugs killing wrong enemy
posted by Jo Davison on 24 Aug 2010 at 12:00 pmMy partner of 23 years is dying of cancer. She has had radiation and chemo and it has not stopped the spread of this despicable disease. It also makes her deathly ill and too weak to walk. Its time our government stopped puppeting the same old tired message and legalized Cannibis ...at least for cancer patients...instead of throwing pot smokers in our over-crowded prisons. Legalize and tax pot and watch the national debt shrink. Also watch cancer patients get another shot at life. I'm going to make it my cause...how many of you will join me?

posted by Douglas Smith on 10 Oct 2010 at 10:01 pmI enjoyed the article, I am happy that someone is looking for a different treatment option. I've had mine seven months and three days.
I'm in for legalization!
posted by Cheryl B. on 29 Oct 2010 at 8:14 amI agree this needs to be legalized. It will help the economy, health and gang related deaths.
i am with you
posted by misty stinson on 22 Sep 2011 at 10:53 amLet's give the tree of life back to the people...cannabis is the cure for a lot of things, and it is used by your endocannaboid system to regulate your entire bodily functions...The truth is we all need it.
Learn more about the medical potential of cannabis
posted by Mary Lynn Mathre on 22 Sep 2011 at 12:05 pmDr. Manuel Guzman will be one of the many cannabis researchers who will be speaking at The Seventh National Clinical Conference on Cannabis Therapeutics that will be held in Tucson on April 26-28, 2012. This accredited conference series is presented by Patients Out of Time and more information can be found at medicalcannabis.com
legalise canabis for medicine and other use
posted by helena on 22 Sep 2011 at 2:58 pmI think its a great shame that the whole world has a negative attitude to canabis and its many wonderful healing properties. I value life more than money, so if we have a cure why not use it to its maximum potential and save lives. It could be as already said, grown legally to provide jobs for farmers and harvest staff. Processed in the right conditions to create to best cures for a variety of diseases. It could be taxed to create revenue. I for 1 will certainly do all I can and sign petitions pro hemp!! Hxx
they are stupid, ignoring truth, and won't do it cuz of the prescription drugs, the FDA, come on people.
posted by Terri on 22 Sep 2011 at 5:06 pmThe truth is the DEA is trying to get permission to obtain marijuana from other countries (Netherlands. Because they claim we can't grow it here. We need to stand up, & do something, federally. Tell your representatives to co-sponsor HR 2306. Which is to end it federally. I myself, could show every state ALL the greats to marijuana. I could show every state how to become self-sufficient (even medical) within 5-10 years. And we would be out of debt. How damn stupid.
I support you Jo!
posted by Bambi on 23 Sep 2011 at 9:30 amGod gave us herbs for a reason. Most have either flavor-enhancing or medicinal value or both. I say if you can throw a seed in the ground & it grows, it's of God. The main reason cannabis is illegal is because it isn't taxed. And even if it was taxed, people can grow it themselves, anywhere in the word. Our government is greedy & stupid. You're right Jo. Legalizing & taxing it makes a lot more sense than filling our prisons with people using marijuana while drunks pose a much greater threat than someone smoking weed. I'll even take it one step further. If we legalized marijuana, the cartels in Mexico would be considerably hard hit or would become legitimate businesses and could employ the people who illegally come to our country thus reducing illegal immigration, providing jobs, eliminating much crime AND allowing medicinal benefits from something God gave us but the US turned into an illegal trade & substance.
Amazing

posted by Bruce on 27 Sep 2011 at 4:58 pmit has been know in my world for quite a while that when cooked down into a oil, which is totally illeagle, this oil has taken away the growth of many illnesses.
just a rice size dab of oil put on the finger and licked into the mouth did just what you wanted it to do. The man couldn't even get out of a car, after one month he was walking up stairs.
A planter's wart was taken away when the oil was put on a band aid and taped to the wort.. what won't this great plant do. spread the word.
