The health benefits of an active sex life are abundant, and have received impressive scholarly support from three recent studies. According to researchers at Queens University in Belfast, sexual activity strengthens pelvic muscles, thereby contributing to a decrease in incontinence; scholars at Wilkes University in Pennsylvania found that sexual intercourse strengthens the immune system by up to 30%; and a paper published by the Journal of American Medical Association reported that frequent ejaculation might decrease the likelihood of prostate cancer.

Given the myriad benefits of an active sex life, why isn't everyone enjoying this profound part of life? One reason: not everyone is in the mood. Female sexual disorders (FSDs) can arise from many causes, including relationship problems, the use of prescription pharmaceuticals, disease, or chemical imbalances. The incidence of Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD), the most widespread FSD, also increases with age and after certain surgical procedures.

"HSDD is the most common sexual problem in women Baby Boomers, particularly those who are naturally and surgically menopausal," says noted sexual health expert Dr. Sheryl A. Kingsberg. "Most women have been lead to think the problem is simply mind over matter and do not realize that this is a real health issue, a misperception that is not allowing them to reap the benefits of a healthy sex life."

The medical world is aware of the need of an FDA approved product to treat female sexual dysfunction. The lead product in development for treating FSD in menopausal women is LibiGel® created by BioSante Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: BPAX). BioSante currently is conducting three Phase III clinical trials to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of LibiGel®, including increasing sexual desire and sexual activity.

When safety and efficacy studies are completed and if the FDA approves the drug, LibiGel® may become the first FDA-approved treatment specifically indicated for HSDD in menopausal women. BioSante hopes to receive FDA approval some time during 2010 or 2011.

"No matter what the age, women should be entitled to feel good about their sex lives, which will lead to other positive benefits in their lives," says Dr. Kingsberg. "Men have had Viagra for the last ten years; hopefully women will have a medical treatment of their own soon, too."
