Actor and human embryonic stem cell research advocate Michael J. Fox next week is scheduled to campaign for former New Hampshire Gov. Jeanne Shaheen's (D) candidacy for the U.S. Senate, the AP/Nashua Telegraph reports. Shaheen is running for the Senate against incumbent Sen. John Sununu (R-N.H.).

Shaheen has called for increased federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. She also has criticized Sununu for supporting President Bush's embryonic stem cell research restrictions (AP/Nashua Telegraph, 9/18). Federal funding for embryonic stem cell research is allowed only for research using embryonic stem cell lines created on or before Aug. 9, 2001, under a policy announced by Bush on that date. Bush twice has vetoed bills that would have allowed federal funding for research using stem cells derived from human embryos originally created for fertility treatments and willingly donated by patients (Daily Women's Health Policy Report, 9/15).

Fox, who has Parkinson's disease, has been a vocal supporter of embryonic stem cell research since his diagnosis. Fox and Shaheen are scheduled to speak in Durham and Manchester on Tuesday (AP/Nashua Telegraph, 9/18).
