New Obama Ad Defends Abortion-Rights Record, Criticizes McCain's Support For Abortion Ban

Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) recently launched a new advertisement in New Mexico and Ohio that cites his support for abortion rights and criticized an advertisement being aired in the same market by the group BornAliveTruth.org, the AP/Google.com reports.

The BornAliveTruth.org ad features 31-year-old Gianna Jessen, who was adopted after a failed abortion, saying, "Sen. Obama, please support born alive infant protections. I'm living proof these babies have a right to live." Obama while serving as an Illinois state senator opposed three legislative moves in 2001, 2002 and 2003 that called for protection for aborted fetuses born alive and determined to be able to survive, citing an existing Illinois state law that already provided such protections. Obama and other opponents of the legislation also stated that it would have undermined Roe v. Wade, according to the AP/Google.com.

The Obama campaign's ad states, "Now votes taken out of context, accusing Obama of letting infants die? It's a despicable lie." Jill Stanek, an antiabortion advocate and organizer of BornAliveTruth.org, responded to the ad by saying that Obama still needs to explain his opposition to the legislation.

Obama's ad also links Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (Ariz.) to the BornAliveTruth.org ad, but the McCain campaign did not pay for the ad, the AP/Google.com reports. "McCain, he's running on a platform to ban abortion, even in cases of rape and incest," the ad says, adding, "Sleazy ads, anti-choice, that's John McCain." The Republican Party's platform includes a call to ban abortion including in cases of rape and incest, but McCain previously has expressed support for rape and incest exceptions (AP/Google.com, 9/20).
