Professor Bill Reilly of Glasgow was elected President-Elect of the British Veterinary Association (BVA) for 2008/2009. The ceremony took place during the Annual General Meeting of the BVA at the close of its Annual Congress, held in London.

1. Professor William (Bill) J Reilly BVMS BSc DVSM FFPHM DipECVPH HonFRCVS, Consultant in Veterinary Public Health and a member of both the Food Standards Agency Board and the Scottish Food Advisory Committee, was, until his 'retirement', co-ordinator of the Gastrointestinal and Zoonoses Section of Health Protection Scotland (HPS). Over a 30-year period Bill, initially as a Civil Servant in the Scottish Executive (MAFF) and thereafter in Health Protection Scotland has made an outstanding contribution to Veterinary Public Health at a Scottish, UK and International level.

2. Bill's academic and teaching achievements, following the five years he spent in practice after graduating, apart, Bill has also worked tirelessly for the British Veterinary Association over the past twenty years or more, serving on numerous committees; he has been President of BVA Scottish Branch and the West of Scotland division as well as President of the Veterinary Public Health Association. A longstanding member of BVA Council he has been a member of Veterinary Policy Group twice. He has also served on committees associated with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and the European College of Veterinary Surgeons and the European College of Veterinary Public Health.
