The U.S. House of Representatives recently voted unanimously to pass a resolution (H.Res.1437) designating October as American Pharmacists Month, which recognizes the contributions made by pharmacists in all practice settings towards improving medication use and advancing patient care. On the first day of the month, Stephen L. Giroux, R.Ph, NCPA President and an upstate New York pharmacy owner, responded with the following statement:

"Keeping America healthy is a solemn obligation of pharmacists. As experts on the frontlines of our health care system, pharmacists work tirelessly to educate their patients about their medications to ensure any illness, medical condition or disease is being fully addressed. We hope our partnerships with the public and private sector will only grow over time in order to improve the level of access and quality care patients receive."

"On behalf of all the pharmacists working tirelessly to provide valuable health care services for patients in over 23,000 independent community pharmacies, I want to thank the U.S. House of Representatives for designating October as American Pharmacists Month. A special note of appreciation goes out to Representative Marion Berry (D-AR), the only pharmacist in Congress, who took the lead in getting this resolution passed unanimously."

The National Community Pharmacists Association, founded in 1898, represents the nation's community pharmacists, including the owners of more than 23,000 pharmacies. The nation's independent pharmacies, independent pharmacy franchises, and independent chains dispense nearly half of the nation's retail prescription medicines.
