Nursing Conference A Success At Musgrove Park Hospital, UK

Staff packed the Lecture Theatre at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton last week for the hospital's second annual nursing and care conference.

Under the heading "Patients First", an audience of over 60 heard a range of presentations examining changes in practice made as a result of learning from and working with patients and their families. These included clinics aimed at young people with diabetes; countywide support groups for people with heart pacemakers; an education program called DAFNE for people with Type 2 diabetes and responding to adults who may be vulnerable to abuse.

Keynote speaker Jo Richmond, from Birmingham Heartlands Trust said that the conference demonstrated many excellent developments, some of which she planned to take back to share with her colleagues. Jo reminded the audience about the importance of treating everyone with respect and using dignity and privacy as levers for change.

Director of Governance and Nursing at Musgrove Park Martine Price said "This was an excellent day, showcasing the fantastic work that our nursing staff do every day. It was also a challenge to us all to continue to work hard to put the patient first in all that we do".

Musgrove Park Hospital Taunton is part of Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust.

The hospital serves a population of 340,000 - primarily living in the area served by NHS South West. Each year almost 40,000 patients are admitted as emergencies; 10,000 patients are admitted for elective surgery; 26,000 are seen for day case surgery; 232,000 patients attend outpatient clinics; 48,000 attend Accident and Emergency, 170,000 diagnostic examinations take place and over 3000 babies are born in the Maternity Department. Almost 1000 patients are admitted to Critical Care each year.

Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust has an annual budget of £180 million. The hospital has over 700 beds, 30 wards, 15 operating theatres, a fully equipped diagnostic imaging department and employs 4,145 staff.
