The new centre has brought the city's main sexual health services - including those for the treatment of sexually transmitted infections, contraception and pregnancy advice - under one roof following a £2.2 million refurbishment of the Central Health Clinic at Tower Hill.
Funded by the Department of Health, the centre offers newly designed and equipped treatment, public and staff areas. It replaces the outdated Milne Centre, which was Bristol's main sexual health clinic until services transferred to the new centre in July.
Mr Peter Greenhouse, Consultant in Sexual Health, says: "These are the best facilities in the country and we are one of the first teaching hospital trusts to introduce a fully-integrated model for all aspects of sexual health care.
"Since we opened in July, we have received lots of positive feedback from patients and from staff. Now that we have the ideal working environment, we will deliver even more effective clinical services. Putting all sexual health services together in one place is more convenient for patients and the new facilities offer a much improved environment for people to sort out their sensitive issues.
"This official opening represents the thanks - on behalf of the entire clinical team and administrative staff - to all of our partners in the new building, and to the Department of Health team for their support."
Dawn Primarolo says: "Everyone involved with this project should be proud of their achievement. I'm delighted to open this modern, purpose designed clinic which is easily accessible to the public and which allows the teams to improve the range and quality of sexual health care across the city."
